The Welcome group is one of the regular creative workshops run by the Glynn Vivian team for the community in Swansea. The Welcome group is a safe place for refugees and people seeking asylum to come together, to learn and socialise and to make art, but is also open to anyone. The group have created portraits, mosaics, and most recently, have created this modular wall hanging.
Led by Associate Artist Mary Hayman, and supported by Hanam Beko, Nylah Mak and Arwen Roberts, the contributors met regularly online and submitted their finished section in December of 2020. Hanam, a trained tailor, constructed the finished pieces, and Nylah designed and created the hand printed text.
The project was devised to celebrate the 10th year of Swansea’s City of Sanctuary Status, and to bring people from all walks of life together to celebrate the amazing multicultural city we live in. Using embroidery, needle-work skills, and creative will, this collaborative wall hanging demonstrates that through kindness, empathy and friendship creativity can bring people together even under trying circumstances.
