Frances Richards: An Artist Apart

Saturday 15 June 2019 //  by Stephanie Rutt

Saturday 15 June 2019 - Sunday 24 November 2019
10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Frances Richards, On Being Alone, 1963, Watercolour on board, Glynn Vivian Art Gallery Collection © Estate of Frances Richards. All rights reserved, DACS 2019

This exhibition focuses on the work of Frances Richards, wife of the painter Ceri Richards, whom she met at the Royal College of Art, London.

Frances Richards work has a distinctive, visionary character that sets it apart from the art of her time in both its abstract and figurative manifestations. The touching and utterly non-academic sophistication of her art, and its consciously modernist affiliations recalls deeply personal recurring themes.

The exhibition will concentrate on the embroidery-collages and unseen drawings and monotypes, executed in the war years and previously unseen until now, reflecting the perspective of a hugely gifted female artist and the dark mood of that fateful time.

The exhibition also presents some of the beautiful and radiantly graceful figurative and flower paintings of her later years.
